100 reasons I no longer believe - 99

Christianity relies on scare tactics and emotional appeals

One of the things I have learnt is that when it comes to gaining converts, Christians have two preferred methods:

Scare tactics

The threat of Hell is often used as the main tool to get people to believe. SCARE them into becoming Christians. Chick Tracts were used to great effect here:

I once played the Devil in a popular Australian stage show called ‘Heaven’s Gates, Hell’s Flames”. The whole idea of this stage show is to scare the hell out of people and get them to convert.

Emotional appeals

These are normally done as a form of a guilt trip, to try to make you feel bad that Jesus had to go through so much suffering to save your soul because he loved you soooo much. I can’t believe how many times I’ve seen evangelists use this tactic. They ignore the fact that the one they are trying to save you from is the one who is going to roast you alive if you don’t worship him.

One thing you will never see is evangelists giving a logical, rational message about salvation, one that can be backed up with strong evidence. The best they can do is anecdotal evidence or scripture.
