My memories of Grandpa.

I always remember Grandpa as being a funny caring guy. He talked fondly of living in the King Country and loved pukekos. One time driving there with him in our car, he pointed out every pukeko he saw. When, nearing the end of our trip, I said “No more Pukekos”. He said “Awwwwwwwww.”

My memories of Uncle Kelvin

Uncle Kelvin was the uncle I saw the least of during my life. He wasn't able to make it to many of the family gatherings and we never saw much of him.

One particular memory I have of him was when he was telling us about a riot in Auckland. Kelvin told us he was there during it and a bottle was thrown in his direction and didn’t smash. He took it home to trade it in at the shop for a few cents.

My memories of Uncle James

During my childhood, I didn’t particularly like him because he was always so stern. But as I grew older, I realised that this was simply his deadpan sense of humour. He was always joking, but you thought he was serious.

My memories of Uncle Nelson

Uncle Nelson was always doing things for others and was an on-fire Christian man who walked the walk as well as he talked the talk. I got to spend a lot of time with him in the late 80s and worked with him in Glen Innes for a year or two at an outreach he arranged for youth. Street kids from the area could come in and play pool and other games. I considered him a bit of a mentor at the time. He was always positive and always had a joke.

My memories of Uncle John

As a kid, my sister Lee and I always found him quite scary. He was always growling at us for one reason or another, even for minor little things. He was in his early 20s at the time and still lived at home with Nana and Grandpa. (Les and Esther Brough).  In 1985 I left home and my mother arranged for me to board with John and his wife Ailsa, in Onehunga, Auckland. It was then that I really got to know Uncle John and found out that he was a really great guy, with a good sense of humour. He always had good words of wisdom.

He was the first of Les and Esther's kids to pass away. Ironically, he was the youngest.
