Born 26 August 1886 in Bowral, Australia, and died 26 June 1957 in Tauranga, New Zealand.  (71 yrs)

Married ELSIE ALBERTA IRELAND 1907 in Waipawa NZ, daughter of WILLIAM IRELAND and CAROLINE ELLIOTT.

ELSIE Born 2 March 1888 in Napier New Zealand, and died 1 April 1969 in Tauranga New Zealand.  (81 yrs)

Walter lost his Mother in child birth when he was 6 years old. He was sent to relatives the Franklin Knights' at Sherbrook near Bulli Pass NSW. Sherbrook is now submerged in a reservoir which supplies water to Sydney, They had a lot of children and he was not really wanted and was very unhappy. He slept in the loft and was very hungry, and worked very hard. (He told us that he had to get up and get the cows in the dark, and was fed mainly bread and water. If he was to be left home on his own, he was told the fruit on the tree had been counted and they should all be there when they got home.) He was left home when they went to church, because his clothes where so ragged. Knights had a timber mill, specialising in shaped facia boards, still seen on houses in Sydney. He ran away to sea at 14 and came to NZ and worked in Timber mills here. He was a very clever man and taught himself to read from the bible. Everyone loved him and his gentle ways. He was deaf later in life, and was a wonderful gardener.
