Notes by Les Brough: Thomas Brough was born in Round Town parish, Dublin about the year 1825. At the age of seventeen he joined the 65th regiment and served in the army about 14 years, including ten years in New Zealand. He came to New Zealand in 1846 on the ship John Maitland and he received his discharge from the army in 1857. He wore a good conduct badge with pay.  Some say his wife’s maiden name was Plunket, he did not settle on the section allotted to him, having previously purchased Murray’s Bay at Bank’s Peninsula, Murray’s Bay is now known as Brough’s Bay. His first son was born on the way out and named John Maitland after the ship.

In May 2011, Anne Modistach of New South Wales, Australia, informed the Richard Brough Family Organisation (RBFO) of the following about John Broe and Thomas Brough: "I have a copy of Thomas Broe's certificate of discharge as attached which states that Thomas was born in the Parish of Roundtown in or near the city of Dublin and that he enlisted in the 65th Regiment of Foot on the 12th March 1842 aged 17 yrs 9 mths. That he served in the army 14 years and 260 days and was in the Australian Colonies (which at that time included New Zealand) ten years and ten months. ...Thomas' army records state he was one of around 100 Irish recruits to the regiment in 1842 and was enlisted in the Dublin district. His father is described as a "miller" in some records by other family members and the John Broe of Rathfarnham was a sawmiller who had mills in the Dublin area. Two of his sons followed the same trade."
