Richard Miller Pinkerton

Born 11 October 1844 in London, and died 16 May 1926 in Yandina Queensland Australia. 


Married: RHODA KNIGHT 17 August 1881 in Australia, daughter of GEORGE KNIGHT and REBECCA DEARLING.

Father = ROBERT CAMPBELL PINKERTON

Richard, drunk too much, but was a good watchmaker and jeweller. He emigrated to Queensland in 1866 from London and lived in Queensland and NSW  for 60 years. He married Rhoda 2½ years after his parents arrived from England.  His sister Margaret Ann (later Turner of Bowral) was witness. He joined his father and brother Robert Letton at the watchmaker's shop at St Leonards. new Pacific Highway North Sydney), They all bought land in the area, (which is now the approach to the Northern end of Sydney Harbour Bridge), but lost it all in the big land slip in the 1880s.  He went to Bowral (NSW). It is thought he went to Bowral early mid 1880s as Grace found an add dated 3 February 1892 which says he had been in his shop, opposite the Post Office for 7 years. He was a member of the local Lodge. His sister Margaret Ann (Turner) lived in Bowral and was there when Rhoda died leaving her 4 children, who went to Rhoda's family.

R PINKERTON opposite Post Office, BOWRAL. 7 February 1892: The weekly meeting of Gordon Lodge was held in the Odd Fellows' Hall on Monday 21st, Bro. j Wylie in the chair. the following officers were nominated for the ensuring term. BROS. J Wylie & Pinkerton were recommended for  L.D.&L.E

Notes for RHODA KNIGHT: Emigrated 11 February 1844 on the "Neptune." Used to take the children to the Salvation Army Citadel and brought the children up to hate liquor as their father drunk too much. She had 11 pregnancies in 6 years and died in childbirth, leaving 4 children 4, 6, 8, and 10 years old. they went to live with her family, each in different homes.

2.      PERCY GEORGE  DAVIS PINKERTON, b. 25 February 1884, Bowral Australia; d. December 1945, Chermside Hospital Brisbane.

 

3.      WALTER VINCENT PINKERTON, b. 26 August 1886, Bowral Australia; d. 26 June 1957, Tauranga  New Zealand.

 

4.      FLORENCE AMELIA ALICE PINKERTON, b. 1888, Bowral  Australia.

Florence was 4 when her mother died in childbirth and was sent to the kindest of the Knights ---The Browns of Exeter NSW who had a stud dairy farm. She is the only one who had a proper schooling and a good home. She married an industrial chemist. She spent some money trying to trace our right to the £1million "waiting in chancery" for descendants of Amelia Alice Pinkerton, but never got far enough. She died of cancer.
