I see people rejoicing because an innocent being is paying the price for their atrocities

I can’t understand why I ever thought the whole notion of Jesus dying on the cross for us was something moral and wonderful. An innocent man paying the price for someone else’s atrocities is an awful thing and it makes no difference whether the innocent man volunteered. There is no justice in this and even I would feel terrible if someone else took my punishment for me. I can’t believe that a caring and just God would endorse something like this.
